Inter Milan “threw away” the Serie A title with their 2-2 draw against Lazio.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They argue winning the Champions League may be the only way for the Nerazzurri to save their season.

There is no hiding the bleak mood at Inter Milan after yesterday’s Serie A clash with Lazio.

The Nerazzurri twice had the lead against the Biancocelesti. And on both occasions, they gave it up relatively cheaply.

In the meantime, Napoli also drew. They misfired in a 0-0 draw away to Parma.

Ironically, the very fact that Napoli got exactly the result that Inter would have hoped for made the Nerazzurri’s own setback all the more painful.

The Gazzetta note that no one from Inter was able to face the media after yesterday’s match.

Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi and his players essentially barricaded themselves in the dressing room. They stayed there for around an hour to fume and try to digest the result.

It is not yet the case that Inter Milan have definitely failed to defend their Serie A title from last season.

Anything can happen on the final day of the season.

However, the feeling is certainly that this was the last opportunity.

It has been a title race with more than its share of twists and turns.

Napoli have hardly been dominant in the league. They have given Inter many chances to take control.

However, yesterday’s draw against Lazio summed up a persistent failure to take advantage of these opportunities on the part of the Nerazzurri.

As the Gazzetta note, all will be forgiven if Inter can beat Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the month.

A triumph in the Champions League would be the ending to the season the entire team has dreamed of.

But the danger is that, without that, only the bitter taste of failure in Serie A will remain.
