Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad in the Europa League round of 16 first-leg at Reale Arena on Thursday evening.
United did not dominate possession, but they looked more dangerous than the hosts, recording 0.78 expected goals in the first half. Sociedad managed just 0.08.
They deservedly took the lead through forward Joshua Zirkee three minutes before the hour mark and maintained composure after taking the lead.
However, Sociedad equalised from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Bruno Fernandes handled the ball. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the spot-kick.
Oyarzabal’s goal gave the Spanish side momentum, and they almost grabbed a late winner through Orri Oskarsson. Goalkeeper Andre Onana denied him.
The Red Devils will be optimistic about qualifying, given that the second leg will take place at Old Trafford.
However, pundit Steve Nicol has expressed concern ahead of the game, stating that United’s poor home form could hamper their chances.
He told ESPN FC: “It has not been a comfortable place. When you are at home, you feel comfortable, you cannot wait to play there, you cannot wait to be in front of your own fans, and you cannot wait to put pressure on the opposition.
“But for United, regardless of the competition they are playing, whether it is Europe or the Premier League, it almost feels like they are under pressure because there cannot be any other reason for that.”
The Red Devils have been one of the best teams in the Europa League this season, making them one of the favourites for the competition.
They demonstrated their impressive form in yesterday’s encounter and will be confident of advancing to the quarter-finals at Sociedad’s expense.
Despite their poor home form in the league, they have yet to lose on their patch in the competition, winning three and drawing one of their four home games.
Sociedad’s away record in this competition also gives United an added advantage. They have recorded only two wins on the road.
