Real Madrid are intensifying their pursuit of a new long-term goalkeeper option, and the name at the top of their radar is now officially on the market.

Espanyol’s standout shot-stopper, Joan Garcia, has publicly confirmed that he will leave the Catalan club this summer—news that will undoubtedly spark action from Los Blancos.

The 24-year-old keeper played a crucial role in helping Espanyol secure La Liga survival in dramatic fashion, with his consistent and often spectacular performances earning the admiration of fans and clubs alike.

Garcia confirms his exit

Garcia has been a revelation this season, and it is no surprise that chants of “Joan stay!” echoed around the RCDE Stadium after their vital win over Las Palmas.

However, speaking to TV3 (h/t SPORT), Garcia made it clear: his time at Espanyol is coming to an end.

“Everyone knows the situation I’m in and the club is in. Whatever happens, I’m leaving,” Garcia stated.

“I feel proud to leave the team in the First Division, which is what it deserves, and that my family can come to see the team in the First Division and hopefully continue like this for many years,” he added.

This announcement is expected to intensify the race for his signature. Several Premier League clubs have reportedly expressed interest, but it is Spain’s two giants — Real Madrid and Barcelona — who appear most serious.

Real Madrid’s plan

With Thibaut Courtois firmly established as the club’s No. 1 when fit, Madrid are still planning for the future.

Garcia, who has a €25 million release clause (which would have dropped to €15 million had Espanyol been relegated), represents a relatively affordable and high-potential signing.

The club views him as an ideal long-term addition who could learn under Courtois while also being ready to step up when called upon, especially with the Belgian now in his thirties and coming off a serious knee injury.
