In a recent report, Birmingham Live revealed that Aston Villa have identified Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo as a target for this January transfer window. It has been stated that the Villans are eyeing a move to sign the Mozambique international this winter.
Catamo has enjoyed a decent campaign at the Portuguese club as he has put in a few impressive displays on the right side of their attack. The 22-year-old has registered two goals and picked up two assists in 20 matches for Sporting this season across multiple competitions.
The Mozambique sensation has proven his worth in the final third by averaging 0.9 shots, 0.5 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate when distributing possession in the opposition half after making 80.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Sporting will run out in the summer of 2028. Thus, it would be far from easy for the Villans to snap him up during this winter transfer period.

Catamo can shoot the ball with power from long range and has got the eye to play some killer passes from the wide areas. He is a good dribbler with the ball and can make a few dangerous runs on the offensive end of the pitch. The Mozambique international mainly operates as a right-winger but can also play as a left-sided wide player if told to do so by his manager.
We can expect Catamo to inject more into Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s attack. He would offer some healthy competition for Leon Bailey at Villa Park in the coming years. However, the jury is still out on whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football.
At 22, Catamo has the potential to become a world-class player in his position someday which makes him a worthy target for the West Midlands club to pursue in the long run. With all things considered, Emery would be wise to move in for the Sporting attacker before the end of this January transfer window.
