Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has today moved to back the club’s stance against Barcelona in the ongoing player registration case.
Atléti, for their part, were one of the first clubs to respond publicly to news of Barcelona being granted registration grounds for Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor for the remainder of the campaign.
And the Rojiblancos were not shy in making clear their concern with the process as a whole.
In a post across the club’s official website and social media platforms on Thursday, Atlético wrote:
‘Club Atlético de Madrid wants to show its deep concern for the situation generated in Spanish football after the resolution adopted by the Consejo Superior de Deportes (“National Sports Council”) on Wednesday. We consider that this decision jeopardises the current system, questioning the rules of the game.’
Speaking to the media on Saturday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the stance taken by those behind the scenes in Spain’s capital was put to the aforementioned Diego Simeone.
And Atlético’s headmaster showed no hesitance in providing his full backing to the capital giants:
“What I understand is that we fully agree with the statement issued by Atlético de Madrid; we share that position entirely. Beyond that, I believe there’s something very important to highlight: you, as journalists, have significant influence. As you mentioned, public opinion is continuously at odds with what’s happening. For us as coaches, the only thing we can do is keep working, focusing on what’s best for our team, and trusting that those responsible for addressing the issue will handle it in the best possible way. But you—journalists—who voice your opinions and have a long-standing history of being involved in these matters, are ultimately the ones who steer the narrative one way or another. You know this very well; you have great power, and you’re fully aware of it.”
