There are things to worry about for FC Barcelona that transcend to places beyond just the football pitch. While sporting objectives are always a top priority, they often come entangled with other targets as well. Such is the way the footballing world operates today, and Barcelona are no strangers to this evolution.

However, when it comes directly to the case of the Catalan giants, they remain a club that continues to pay the price of years of financial mismanagement. While signing players has been made a headache in itself consequently, there are also some other repercussions.

Due to their limited salary space, the club has had to move around some resources here and there to create enough space to register players and be able to incorporate the new signings that they have been able to make. Unfortunately, that has also caused other issues to pop up as well.

One such glaring issue that Barcelona has still not been able to fully resolve is the contractual complication that they face with Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder, aged 27, currently has a contract and agreement in place with the Catalan giants until 2026, but a renewal offer is something that Barcelona are hoping to reach an agreement upon.

As highlighted by SPORT, however, the club will not wait forever. In fact, they have already given the player a deadline and they are beginning to get a little impatient with the entire ordeal. Believing that enough time has been given to the player, they hope to get his deal figured out now within the next three months, and a potential agreement until 2029 remains their ideal outcome.

Initially, Barça let the player recover from his injury in peace. Now that he is back, however, the club believes that it is time to get an answer from him that will help them sort out future possibilities. At the moment, despite having been sent a renewal offer already by the club since quite some time, there has been no kind of response.

For Barcelona, the €70 million-rated Dutch midfielder is a player who could be essential for the club in the years to come. Hansi Flick will likely show this on the field as well now that De Jong is fully recovered and his playing time is only expected to increase step by step. However, the club does simultaneously understand that an agreement must be reached to extend his contract in order to better distribute his salary.

Ultimately, however, a lot will depend on whether or not both parties can reach an agreement. While Barcelona remain optimistic, there is always a chance that things could end up going south and then the club may be forced to consider selling the player in the coming summer of 2025.

Previously, the player has been insistent about staying at Barcelona despite the club even trying to offload him at times reportedly. Now, however, things look a little different. To make sure that they avoid what happened with Ousmane Dembele, the club will be a lot more cautious with De Jong’s renewal process and will look to have a definitive answer ahead of time to be able to address whatever consequences come as a result to the best of their abilities.
