Barry worse than Baldy – Rangers badly need a manager

We love Barry Ferguson. Let’s get that out the way right now. He’s a Rangers legend, a hero of the shirt, one of the best captains we’ve ever had, and we’d defend him to the hilt for what he achieved as a player. But even that legendary status doesn’t make him immune to scrutiny as a manager—and right now, statistically speaking, Barry and his coaching staff are the worst in Rangers’ modern history.
A win ratio of just 33% is nothing short of catastrophic for a Rangers boss. This is a club where winning is demanded, expected, and woven into the DNA. Even under Michael Beale and Philippe Clement—both of whom were rightly dismissed for failing to deliver—the win ratios were notably higher. Clement, for all the criticisms we’ve aimed at him, had a win rate of 63%, 61% this season alone, and even Giovanni van Bronckhorst, another ex-player and fan favourite, managed 64%.
Ferguson’s record, however, sits dismally at the bottom. Out of his first 12 matches in charge, Rangers have won only four, drawn three, and lost five. The most damning part? Two of those wins came against absolute cannon fodder—Livingston and Ross County at Ibrox. The remaining results have included some of the worst performances we’ve seen at home in years, including defeat to Kilmarnock, and a dire draw with Dundee that all but sealed the title for Celtic.
It’s not just the results either. The football has been poor—passive, lethargic, and lacking identity. There’s been little to no evidence of a tactical plan, and while we accept Ferguson inherited a broken squad, so did Clement, and so did Beale. That excuse wears thin fast at a club like Rangers.
We wanted Barry to succeed. We hoped the fire he showed as captain would translate into the dugout, galvanising the team into a title-chasing unit. But the harsh truth is that it hasn’t. Rangers have regressed, the stats prove it, and the performances match up. And this isn’t just about Barry either—his backroom team has to be questioned too. They’re collectively not getting a tune out of this side, and no matter how deep the squad issues go, a Rangers manager must win most of his matches. That’s the job.
Sentimentality can’t run Rangers Football Club. We adore Barry Ferguson, but his managerial spell so far has been nothing short of a disaster.
