Birmingham City and Middlesbrough both failed in their attempts to agree a Deadline Deal for Rangers defender Jack Simpson, as per a report from Football Insider.

Simpson has been restricted to just three league appearances for the Scottish champions this season, with just one of those games coming from the very start.

The 25-year-old has struggled to pave his way to first-team contention since making his summer move from Bournemouth, and the Glasgow club were reportedly willing to see the defender depart.

Who did the club sign Joe Lumley from?

Wigan Athletic Bolton Wanderers Queens Park Rangers Sunderland

The report states that the Championship duo left it too late to register a genuine interest and ran out of time to agree a deal for the Rangers outcast.

Simpson appeared nine times for the Cherries last season, which included a run of six starts where he helped keep four clean sheets.

The verdict

It is a shame to see the lack of game time that Simpson has seen this season and a Championship move could have certainly helped rebuild his progression as a footballer.

Birmingham were linked with several central defenders during the window, and that was even after they had agreed a deal for Manchester United’s Teden Mengi.

Simpson is getting to an age where playing regular minutes is becoming the ultimate ambition.

There is no doubting that he has what it takes to shine at Championship level, whilst he is more than capable of breaking through at Rangers.
