Crystal Palace defenders Tyrick Mitchell and Marc Guehi on England duty
Chelsea are considering re-signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to add to his defensive options this summer.
Following the news that Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament surgery, Chelsea are keen to add depth in that position.
With the French defender set to be sidelined for the foreseeable future, Chelsea are seemingly in the market for another defender.
Chelsea have already added to their forward options, but now their attention has turned to strengthening their midfield and defence.
According to Nizaar Kinsella of Standard Sport, Chelsea are weighing up a move for Guehi along with Arsenal and Tottenham.
“Chelsea interested in Crystal Palace’s £50m-rated Marc Guehi. Arsenal and Tottenham also like the defender,” Kinsella confirmed on Twitter.
“It remains hugely conditional on fees involved and if Pochettino feels he has enough quality already after pre-season.”
Chelsea sold Guehi to Crystal Palace just two years ago for a fee of around £18m. His value has increased exponentially since then and Pochettino could be tempted by the player.
He is coming off the back of two excellent seasons with Palace and is now a fully-fledged England international.
At just 23 years old his potential is clear to see and you can see why Chelsea would be tempted to re-sign him, albeit at a much heightened price than what they originally sold him for.
Roy Hodgson has spoken highly of the defender since being back at the club and he still believes there is room for improvement with Guehi.
“Just in general terms he looks like a centre-back who has got a lot of qualities – he’s got pace, he understands and likes to defend,” Hodgson told reporters in April.
“He is good on the ball. If you’re ticking boxes of what I like my centre-back to look like, he ticks so many boxes. Now it is up to him, with the help he’ll get from the guys around him, to keep building on that.
“His first couple of seasons at Crystal Palace have been a massive success. He’s got to keep that going and hope to even keep adding a little bit more each year.”
