Cole Palmer wins Player of the Month – and narrowly misses historic double

Cole Palmer was named England’s Men’s Player of the year back on Tuesday, but he hasn’t stopped an impressive week there.

The Chelsea forward has today been announced as the Premier League Player of the Month for September. He joins manager Enzo Maresca, who has just won the Manager of the Month award for the same period.

Palmer’s goals and assists were key to the Chelsea results which won his coach the award for a month in which we drew the opening game against Crystal Palace and then won the 3 following games against Bournemouth, West Ham and Brighton.

There are tougher runs to come, but Palmer’s impact against these weaker teams was immense. He had 5 goals and an assist in those games. Four of those goals game in one half against Brighton, and included a magical free kick up there with the very best we’ve ever seen taken by a Chelsea player.

Palmer has only been a regular Premier League player for a year or so – but this is already his second Player of the Month award. His free kick didn’t win the Goal of the Month – but perhaps should have. Incredibly, he already won that award just a few weeks ago for his lob against Wolves.

Palmer warming up to new challenges

This new level of recognition for club and country is well deserved, but we hope it doesn’t change Palmer’s ultra cool demeanour. We don’t imagine it will. Once he comes back from England duty, Chelsea face a much tougher run of games where it will be harder for him to find time and space to get shots away or play killer passes.

Maresca will need to use all of his coaching nous to get his star man free and available in dangerous areas in these games to come.
