However, the hosts were denied the opportunity to level matters in the second half when Virgil van Dijk got away with an apparent foul in his own box.

The centre-back pulled on Marc Guehi’s arm to stop him from getting to the ball, but referee Simon Hooper did not point to the spot. VAR confirmed his decision following a review.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot agreed with the decision after the final whistle, saying: “It is not a penalty for me as he [Guehi] wouldn’t ever get the ball.”

Glasner praised the visitor’s performance, but did not agree with Slot or the officials on the controversial penalty call.

“First half Liverpool showed why they have only lost one game – they played really well. We struggled a little bit, but in the second half we did really well,” he told TNT Sports.

“I saw from TV we should have had a clear penalty for the foul on Marc Guehi. He [Virgil van Dijk] holds him with two hands. It is a loss, but in the second half it gives me a lot of confidence for the upcoming games.

“It is clear when Marc makes the movement to the ball. If the same foul is on the halfway line it’s a foul – if it’s foul, it’s a foul.”

Glasner reiterated the point that his side should have had a penalty when speaking ot BBC Match of the Day. “Absolutely I saw it after the game. I didn’t see it during the game and for me it was a clear foul. VAR had to intervene but they didn’t.”

Palace remain in the bottom three of the Premier League table without a win following the result.
