It was a positive start to competitive action in 2025 for Celtic FC Women, who picked up all three points on their return to league duties on Sunday afternoon.

The Ghirls ran out 4-2 winners against Partick Thistle at New Douglas Park, marking their first competitive outing of the year with three points.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, boss Elena Sadiku stated that she was pleased to see her side mark their return with a victory.

Although there were aspects of the performance she believes the squad could have improved upon, with the Hoops adjusting to a new formation, the Celtic Head Coach believes that will come with time.

She said: “Obviously it was a good start when it comes to winning the game. I think looking at the stats from the match, we had about 12 shots on target. We only managed to score four though.

“At the same time, I think we made some mistakes that Partick Thistle were able to take advantage of.

“Overall, we are happy with the three points. But we could maybe execute the game a bit better, and that is what we are looking forward to doing in our next game.

“We have changed the formation a little bit. The girls know exactly what to do as we have been practising what spaces we want to exploit.

“I think that the today the Partick Thistle goalkeeper made three really good saves. They aren’t a bad team.

‘Obviously our standards are high, and we want to push the girls to execute things even better.’

“We want to strive to be as good as we can be. But we start 2025 with a win, and that is a good thing!”

Having made their return to action on Sunday, it is gearing up to be another busy month ahead for Sadiku and her squad.

With another big seven days ahead, the Swede is hoping her side can continue building momentum and consistency as they take on Aberdeen in Hamilton on Wednesday evening.

“We have a great week to look forward to,” she said. “We have Aberdeen on Wednesday night, and then Rangers in the Sky Sports Cup next weekend.

‘So, we just need to be consistent with our performance because that is how we are going to get the best out of the team.’

“We can’t just show up when we want to show up. We need to have that consistency going on.

“That is what I am looking forward to this week, to see how well we can perform against Aberdeen, which builds up to the Rangers game.”
