The Baggies have been on the lookout for a new boss since the decision was made to sack Tony Mowbray following their failure to reach the play-offs in the season that has just finished.

The former Albion favourite returned to the club after Carlos Corberan left for Valencia, but Mowbray couldn’t inspire a positive run of results, which was why he was dismissed with a few games to go.

Ryan Mason emerges as top managerial target for West Brom

Since then, the hierarchy has been on the lookout for a new man to lead the team going into next season, and a host of names were linked with the vacancy.

And it appears Mason is the man the Albion board want, as the Daily Mail revealed that talks are taking place between the Spurs coach and the Championship side, with a ‘formal approach’ expected this week.

It has also been reported by Telegraph journalist John Percy that Mason will be offered the job in the coming days as West Brom look to get this finalised swiftly.

Ryan Mason would be a bold appointment for West Brom

The former Spurs player turned to coaching after his premature retirement from the game, and he has worked under various managers in North London, which includes being part of the staff under Ange Postecoglou, who led the team to Europa League glory.

As well as that, Mason has had two spells as interim manager, so he is highly-rated at Spurs.

Yet, at 33, this would represent a risky move from Albion, as Mason is unproven as a manager, and this would be his first permanent role.

Of course, that doesn’t mean it won’t work out, and Kieran McKenna is an obvious example of a talented coach who handled the step-up to management in the EFL with ease.

But, there will be pressure on Mason to have Albion in the mix for promotion next season, and the Baggies fans will also be hoping he adopts a progressive, attacking style of play.

Ultimately, there needs to be faith in owner Shilen Patel and sporting director Andrew Nestor, as they have overseen a thorough process, and if they think Mason is the right man, it’s about getting this deal over the line, and then backing him in the window.
