Miron Muslic is set to exit Plymouth Argyle following his exit clause being triggered by Schalke
Plymouth Argyle have made it clear that Miron Muslic has made the decision to move on from the club following their relegation to League One.
The Pilgrims have confirmed that the coach has walked away after just four months in charge following an approach from a German side.
It has been reported by Sky Sports that Schalke are behind the move after a £1 million release clause was activated.
The 42-year-old is set to move to the 2. Bundesliga outfit, with Plymouth planning for life in League One after a 23rd place finish in the Championship.
Plymouth have made it clear in a statement that they have agreed for Muslic to open talks with Schalke.
However, their dissatisfaction with the development is obvious, as they have highlighted a number of key moves made to ensure his position at the club, including the arrival of new players, as well as verbal assurances that he would remain in charge in League One.
“Argyle can confirm that we have reluctantly allowed Head Coach Miron Muslic to open talks with a 2. Bundesliga side after he expressed his desire to speak with the German team and not return to England,” wrote the club, via their official website.
“Despite regular communication since the end of the season, and no mention of any issues, Miron has now made it clear that, after extended periods away from his family, this opportunity provides him the chance to be closer to them after four years on the road.
“We are frustrated by this decision, having implemented clear structures, processes and personnel to aid Miron and his coaching staff as we look to return to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity.
“Not only that, the club have also moved quickly to bring in new signings and received repeated verbal promises from Miron that he was committed to Argyle and would do everything to help the club bounce back to the second tier.
“Muslic joined the Greens in January 2025, on a three-and-a-half-year contract, after a period out of the game having departed Cercle Brugge.
“He will now leave Argyle just four months into that long-term commitment.
“We wish him the best for his future career.”
Muslic replaced Wayne Rooney as manager in January, but was unable to turn around their position inside the relegation zone in the Championship despite earning positive results in his four months in charge.
Muslic did an excellent job with Plymouth in a short span of time, so his departure is a real blow for the club.
He made an immediate impact, notably winning an FA Cup clash against Liverpool in the fourth round in his first few weeks in the role.
Looking at the Championship table from just when he was appointed, the Pilgrims had the 12th best points return, earning 26 from 21 games, which equals 56 when extrapolated for a full 46-game campaign.
There’s no doubt he could’ve had the team competing for promotion straight away in League One next season, so it’s understandable that the club are disappointed with this development.
