Nathan Ake is set to be out for almost three months after undergoing surgery, Pep Guardiola has revealed.

The defender has undergone surgery on his left foot after suffering a fracture.

He was taken off at half-time of Man City’s FA Cup win over Plymouth Argyle and Guardiola says the Dutchman’s season is now over.

“10 weeks, 11 weeks, they said to me,” Guardiola said.

“When it’s surgery, it’s pretty serious. When you go to surgery it is because something wrong has happened.

“The important bit is done. He has struggled a lot this season with problems in his feet and it’s happened.”

Ake has suffered persistent injury problems this season and has managed to feature in just 10 Premier League games.

City are also currently without fellow defenders John Stones and Manuel Akanji with long-term injuries too but Guardiola is backing January signings Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis to step up in their absence.

“The impact of Khusanov was really good,” the City boss said. “Not the first minute against Chelsea but since then really good.

“Vitor was really good against Plymouth. Now some centre-backs from the academy are coming to train with us because of the absence of the three central defenders almost until the end of the season.

“Maybe they will be ready for the Club World Cup or the last one or two games but we are talking about eight to ten weeks so it’s a lot of time.

“We are lucky that the club took the decision to bring someone in instead of in the summer because otherwise right now we would be in trouble.”

City take on high flying Nottingham Forest on Saturday who currently sit third, one point and one place above Guardiola’s side.

“When you are third in the table after eight or ten games, okay, but when you are there with 11 games left, it’s because you have done really well,” Guardiola said about his team’s upcoming opponents.

“Otherwise you cannot be there for many months, doing good things and being third in the table.

“Impressive, I would say.”
