Manchester United are ‘looking at’ long-term Old Trafford target Pau Torres and could pip Tottenham Hotspur to the Villarreal central defender’s services when the transfer window reopens, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Erik ten Hag will move into the Red Devils hot seat at the end of the season and it appears Torres could be among his first signings since heading to the Premier League.

What’s the latest news involving Torres?

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have reignited their interest in Torres having also mulled over making a move last year.

The report suggests the 17-cap Spain international is open to offers which would take him away from his boyhood club, while Torres also has a release clause worth in the region of £50.5million written into his Villarreal contract.

However, the Red Devils are not the only Premier League side eyeing Torres as Football Insider have revealed Tottenham Hotspur are also keeping tabs on the 25-year-old.

It is understood that Spurs head coach Antonio Conte is a huge admirer of Torres and sees him as one of the best centre-backs in Europe.

Torres’ Villarreal deal – which is worth £63,000-per-week – still has more than two years to run.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Torres?

O’Rourke understands Manchester United are pursuing Torres once again and believes they could beat Tottenham to his signature.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “Torres is a real quality central defender. The problem for Spurs is I don’t think they’ll be the only ones in the market for him this summer. He is probably on the radar of a number of top clubs.

“I know Manchester United are back looking at him as well. They were interested last summer, before they signed Raphael Varane.

“Pau Torres has had another great season, helping Villarreal to the semi-finals of the Champions League.”

Why is Torres on the Red Devils’ radar?

Manchester United saw how good Torres can be when they were beaten in the Europa League final by Villarreal last season.

That remains the only piece of silverware the 6’3 star has won during the early stages of his career, but Torres – who has been described as ‘extraordinary’ – is surely destined to have more success in the not-too-distant future.

Despite uncertainty over where he will be plying his trade next season, Torres has still made 40 appearances since the current campaign got underway and also shown he can be a threat in the opposition’s penalty area by chipping in with five goals.

He has failed to miss a single minute of Champions League action and played a vital role in Villarreal’s run to the semi-finals.
