MLS 2025 officially commences for New England Revolution and Nashville SC this Saturday at GEODIS Park as a venue to stage what could be the game that marks the tone for both teams in this season. The struggle comes with the great burden of roster rebuilds, new endeavors, and the desperate need for an early statement.
For the first time since making the move to MLS, Nashville SC has a completely new squad. Under the guidance of BJ Callaghan, the Boys in Gold not only added reinforcements all along the perimeter — They have gone further downtown by adding homegrown talent.
Center defender Chris Applewhite (17), forward Adem Sipić (18), and midfielder Isaiah Jones (18) are indicators of a new direction for the club's identity. Having faith in young, local talent isn't always a winning formula, but it does improve the bond between the team and fans, who should be packing GEODIS Park for opening day.
Aside from that, Nashville also boasts a positive home opener reputation, remaining unbeaten at GEODIS Park since its opening in 2022. A 1-1 draw against Philadelphia Union, a 2-0 win against NYCFC, and a 0-0 draw against New York Red Bulls show that the team can endure the pressure of opening night.
Where Nashville is embracing the change, New England Revolution isn't too far behind. Since Caleb Porter took over, the team has witnessed a complete overhaul of the roster, with 14 new signings. The number is staggering, but it raises a very pertinent question, can a team filled with so many new players have instant chemistry?
New England's offseason was focused on building camaraderie between players, and early reports suggest that Porter's philosophy is being absorbed quickly. Experienced leaders like Carles Gil, Brandon Bye, and Alhassan Yusuf will be crucial in assisting the team in making a smooth transition.
The recent past does not bode well for the Revolution, however. The 2024 campaign was an enormous disappointment, and beginning 2025 with a loss would be a big blow to their efforts to flip the script. Both teams have everything on the line in this game. Nashville is hoping to defend its home fortress, and New England is seeking redemption. Saturday night at GEODIS Park will be the first trial of their new personas.
