It was a busy week for several Spanish clubs, as the Champions League returned in midweek before an important Matchday 6 in LALIGA EA SPORTS over the weekend. The main storylines from those matches are outlined in further detail below.
FC Barcelona keep scoring and winning
FC Barcelona remain top of the LALIGA EA SPORTS table and now have a record of six wins from six games, thanks to a thrilling 5-1 victory away at Villarreal CF on Sunday. Los Azulgranas have already scored 22 goals this league season, by far the most in Europe’s top five leagues, with the second-top scorers being PSG on 17 goals.
Ter Stegen suffers a serious injury
There was one piece of bad news for FC Barcelona from Sunday’s victory, which is that goalkeeper and club captain Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a serious injury in the first half of the match. Having missed a lot of time with injury in the past few years, it’s another blow for the German and he has already received messages of support from across the footballing community.
Real Madrid climb into second
Real Madrid’s new-look attack is beginning to click, and they’ve now scored multiple goals for three LALIGA EA SPORTS games in a row. The latest was a 4-1 comeback victory over RCD Espanyol on Saturday, in which Rodrygo, Vinícius and Kylian Mbappé all scored. That result means they’re now the sole team in second place, four points behind leaders Barça.
It’s 38 games undefeated for Real Madrid
With their win against RCD Espanyol, Real Madrid have now gone 38 LALIGA EA SPORTS matches undefeated, the equivalent of an entire league season. Not since Matchday 6 of last season, when they lost at Atlético de Madrid, have they failed to pick up at least a point domestically. Now, they’ll hope to keep this run going and aim to hit the LALIGA EA SPORTS record of 43 league games undefeated, which is held by FC Barcelona.
Athletic Club win three in a row
Now in third place are Athletic Club, who have won three matches in a row. Following a tough start to the season, the Basques are finding their groove and have now defeated UD Las Palmas, CD Leganés and RC Celta consecutively. That haul of nine points has moved them up to third in the table.
The spoils are shared in the south of Madrid
Getafe CF and CD Leganés played their first derby match in over four and a half years on Sunday, resuming their historic rivalry that has taken place throughout the Spanish footballing pyramid. It finished as a 1-1 draw, as a Borja Mayoral penalty cancelled out a Jorge Sáenz goal.
Valencia CF secure their first win
Valencia CF entered Matchday 6 still searching for their first win, making their home game against Girona FC especially important. Rubén Baraja’s charges delivered and goals from Luis Rioja and Dani Gómez meant Los Che won 2-0 against the Catalan side. That means Valencia CF have their first win of the season, with Getafe CF and UD Las Palmas now the only winless teams remaining.
Deportivo Alavés and CA Osasuna hit 10 points
One of the most impressive teams so far this season has been Deportivo Alavés. The Basque outfit already have 10 points to their name, adding another victory this past weekend when they overcame Sevilla FC 2-1. CA Osasuna have had a similarly successful start to the campaign and achieved a 2-1 win of their own, in their case over UD Las Palmas, to also move on to 10 points already.
William Carvalho has successful surgery
Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho has suffered an Achilles tendon injury and had successful surgery on the issue this past week. The 32-year-old now begins the recovery process, which should last several months.
The Champions League is up and running
The four Spanish clubs who are taking part in the 2024/25 Champions League had their first fixtures of the league phase this past week. While the two away teams fell to slender defeats, as FC Barcelona lost 2-1 at Monaco and Girona FC fell 1-0 at PSG, there were a pair of victories in Spain’s capital as Real Madrid defeated Stuttgart 3-1 and Atlético de Madrid fought back to beat RB Leipzig 2-1.
