Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says his side’s home defeat to Fulham is reminder they will have to be at their very best to see off Arsenal in the League Cup next week.
Jacob Murphy put the Magpies in front at St James’ Park, but the visitors turned it around after the break. Raul Jimenez equalised on the hour mark before substitute Rodrigo Muniz scored a late winner.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle, Howe admitted that Newcastle didn’t put in their best performance against the Cottagers.
“I don’t think we played particularly well,” he said. “We got ourselves ahead, we conceded a couple of poor goals today, never got full control of the game like we wanted to do. Very disappointing overall.

“I thought both halves weren’t perfect for us. In the first half we got the lead but we rode our luck at times, I don’t think we ever got control like we wanted to. Overall I didn’t like the feel of us today and I feel we can do a lot better.”
Newcastle have now lost consecutive home games in the Premier League for the first time since January 2024 after they were handed a 4-1 battering by Bournemouth last month.
“It’s the second home game in a row where we haven’t performed and that’s a huge frustration for us,” Howe said. “That’s two back-to-back games where we’ve been nowhere near ourselves.
“We just have to hold our hands up and say we didn’t perform today. Athletically we weren’t ourselves, all these things contribute to a disappointing day.”
The Tyneside outfit welcome Arsenal to St. James’ Park next Wednesday for the return leg of the League Cup semi-final having won the first leg 2-0 away.
Asked if home form is a concern ahead of that fixture, Howe answered: “I think the whole atmosphere and feeling will be very different on Wednesday night but it’s another reminder that we need to be near our best to win games and it’s another example of the quality of Premier League teams.”
