Union Berlin have today announced the contract extension of the club’s longest-serving player in the current squad, Christopher Trimmel. No details of the new contract have been released, but the Austrian’s previous deal was due to expire in June 2023.

“When I came to Berlin more than eight years ago, the clear goal was to be promoted to the Bundesliga at some point, and I was convinced I would experience something great with Union,” said Trimmel. “The last few years have been incredibly emotional and formative for the club, but also for me personally. I’m very happy to continue to be a part of, and to shape all of that.”

In the summer, Trimmel will go into his 10th season with the Berlin club. After moving from Rapid Wien on a free transfer in July 2014, Trimmel has played 286 games across all competitions and was made the club’s captain in 2018 following the departure of Felix Kroos.

Trimmel has seen plenty of good times at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in recent years from their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019, securing their Bundesliga status for another season before qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021 and then the Europa League the following season. And this season, Union spent seven weeks as Bundesliga leaders, as their stock continues to rise.

Union’s form has somewhat dropped off prior to the World Cup with just one win in their last five Bundesliga games, but securing another season in European football would again be an excellent achievement.
