Barcelona locked horns with Girona in another Catalan derby on Sunday afternoon and the game turned out far closer than initially anticipated.

The Blaugrana dominated the first half fiercely and created a plethora of chances, all of which went down the drain courtesy of poor finishing and spectacular saves from Gazzaniga.

Eventually, however, they did take the lead just before half-time and looked set to put the game to bed.

An equaliser against the run of play from Danjuma saw Girona draw level once more, but Robert Lewandowski converted a half-chance to hand Barcelona the lead once more in the afternoon.

He then scored a second and sealed the result before Torres put the cherry on the cake with a great finish.

Wojciech Szczesny: 6.5

The goalkeeper had little to no role to play on the night as Barcelona once again kept the lion’s share of the possession and barely gave Girona any sight of goal.

Not much he could do to deny Girona their equaliser.

Gerard Martin: 6.5

The youngster did a decent job defensively but was evident as one of Barcelona’s weaker links in the buildup phase of the game.

Often found himself the target of Girona’s relentless press and misplayed the ball to lose possession. Nevertheless, Martin did not do a whole lot wrong.

Inigo Martinez: 8

The veteran defender started his second consecutive game since coming back from injury and was impeccable not only with his judgement but the timing of his tackles.

Further, Martinez excelled with his distribution and played the role of being the team’s orchestrator from the back especially with Pau Cubarsi not being involved.

Ronald Araujo: 7.5

Coming into the dynamics for the first time after the international break, the Uruguayan star dominated the defensive department physically and outmuscled Girona’s forwards more often than not.

Showed conspicuous signs of improving his distribution and awareness of the offside trap as well.

Jules Kounde: 7.5

The Frenchman who never rests continued to start for Barcelona on Sunday afternoon and was solid on the right flank both offensively and defensively.

He was also involved in a few magical combination play sequences with Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez and even had a goal disallowed in the first half.

Pedri: 8.5

Barcelona’s relentless engine was again at the heart of the team’s buildup and ensured that the team’s spell of possession flowed without turbulence.

Put in a great defensive shift when the team was off the ball and continued to impress as Barcelona’s creator-in-chief.

Eric Garcia: 8

Garcia was brought into the starting lineup as Flick’s choice to replace Frenkie de Jong in the double pivot.

While he did do a good job in terms of holding the fortress, he did not drop between the two centre-backs in the buildup as the Dutchman usually does and drifted into higher spaces to aid in the buildup.

Fermin Lopez: 8.5

The La Masia star replaced Dani Olmo in the starting lineup as the attacking midfielder and was perhaps the team’s single-most dangerous player in the final third.

Lopez’s constant movements behind the defence helped him unlock spaces that were otherwise hard to pick out and he ensured to fight for every half-chance in the final third without hesitating to shoot on goal. Racked up the assist for Lewandowski’s goal.

Gavi: 7.5

Starting as a floating midfielder, Gavi’s position on the field last night was actually as a pseudo-left-winger to replace Raphinha who was still not deemed ready to start.

Yet, the player played most of his night in the middle of the park and put in a massive shift in terms of winning the ball, taking on duels and ensuring the ball stays in constant circulation.

Gavi also created Barcelona’s second goal with a lovely pass over the defence in the pre-assist.

Lamine Yamal: 8

The Golden Boy was electric from the get-go and did not hesitate in taking on Miguel Gutierrez on the flank. Largely came out on top in the duels and even created some sensational inroads into Girona’s area.

Eventually, the player created Barcelona’s opening goal with a free-kick that took a deflection off a defender and found its way back into the net.

Robert Lewandowski: 9

The Polish striker looked active and participated in the buildup not only on the ball but also with his movements.

Yet, he had at least two chances in the first half that he should have put away in his sleep with one of them being a direct 1v1 against the goalkeeper with sufficient space and time.

Scored just past the hour mark to give Barcelona the lead again with an unconventional finish. Completed his brave with an eloquent finish 15 minutes later.

Frenkie de Jong: 8

Came on in the second half and took charge of leading the midfield alongside Pedri. Led the counterattack and showed great presence of mind to help Lewy score his third.

Ferran Torres: 8

Came on as an impact substitute and made no mistakes, converting one chance to bury a goal once more.
