Bayern Munich moved seven points clear of Bayer Leverkusen with a 3-2 win against Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon, but Vincent Kompany’s side were made to work for their win.
Leon Goretzka worked his way back into Kompany’s starting line-up and the once out-of-favour midfielder repaid the Belgian’s faith with Bayern’s first of the afternoon. The 29-year-old picked up the ball, driving forward before firing a low shot past Kamil Grabara.
Although dominating the opening stages with Leroy Sané finding the bar and Michael Olise forcing Grabara into an early save, Wolfsburg grew in confidence and found an equaliser through Mohamed Amoura, who scored his seventh Bundesliga goal of the season. It was a lapse in concentration from the Rekordmeister who dropped their defensive line on a set-piece, allowed Max Arnold to play the ball short, a routine straight from Wolfsburg’s training ground.
But despite finding their footing in the game, Wolfsburg were unable to push on and it was Olise who restored Bayern’s lead after 39 minutes following a Grabara goalkeeping error. Joshua Kimmich then gave Bayern a 3-1 lead, but it was ruled out following a handball.
Goretzka then added his second of the afternoon with a header from an Olise free-kick after 62 minutes. It’s the German’s third Bundesliga goal of the season in just his sixth league start under Kompany. His performance against Wolfsburg will certainly give Kompany a selection headache ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Feyenoord and Freiburg.
Although Kompany’s side dominated much of the game, Amoura added a second for Wolfsburg with three minutes of normal time remaining, but VfL were unable to find an equaliser at the Allianz Arena. Goretzka’s brace means Bayern have now won four successive Bundesliga games following their defeat in Mainz in mid-December, moving seven points clear of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, who host Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga Topspiel.

GGFN Man of the Match: Leon Goretzka – Once a mainstay in Bayern Munich’s midfield alongside Joshua Kimmich, Goretzka has had to fight for his position of late with competition from young prodigy Aleksandar Pavlovic and the €50m signing João Palhinha. Making just his sixth Bundesliga start of the season, Goretzka scored a brace on his return, registered 100 touches completed 97 percent of his passes – also provided defensive stability with seven defensive actions and eight recoveries against a Wolfsburg side that looked to counter-attack.
