Reds crash out of the FA Cup against the Championship strugglers
Liverpool’s hopes of winning a quadruple this season are over after a shock defeat to Plymouth in the FA Cup fourth round.
The Reds arrived at Home Park in great form after reaching the Carabao Cup final thanks to a second leg win over Tottenham, but there will be no domestic cup double for Arne Slot in his first season as head coach.
Liverpool suffered an early blow with Joe Gomez, only just back from a hamstring injury, saw his first appearance of 2025 come to an end after just 11 minutes as he was replaced by youngster Isaac Mabaya.
As the experienced defender sat up on the turf, his expression conveyed sheer devastation as he faces another spell on the sidelines.
Other than that, the first-half was a relative low-key affair. Darko Gyabi had a couple of efforts for the home side whilst Mustapha Bundu was causing problems for Liverpool’s new central defensive pairing of Jarell Quansah and Wataru Endo.
The away side’s one and only effort on target came late in the half when James McConnell forced Plymouth goalkeeper Conor Hazard into a routine save.
Plymouth broke the deadlock early in the second half as Darko Gyabi flicked the ball over his head and it struck Harvey Elliott's arms which were above his head, so the referee had to choice but to award a penalty.
Ryan Hardie, who missed a penalty that would have seen Argyle take Chelsea to penalties at Stamford Bridge in the fourth round four years ago, stepped up and sent Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way as Home Park erupted.
Kelleher then produced a stunning save to deny Hardie a second moments later as he tipped the striker’s effort onto the post.
Liverpool pushed for an equaliser but Hazard produced stunning saves from Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez, whilst he kept out Kelleher’s header in the last action of the game to signal one of the biggest FA Cup shocks of all time.
