Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras after striking a verbal agreement with the defender, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Spaniard has agreed to a five-year contract with Los Blancos until 2028, which will see him earn around €9 million euros per year.
Los Merengues are currently in talks with Benfica to finalise the deal as they aim to have Carreras for next month’s Club World Cup.
The talented left-back has a release clause worth €50 million, but Madrid are looking to lower the fee.
Manchester United have a buy-back option on Carreras, who they sold to Benfica last year, but it appears that the English giants have no plans to activate it.
The 22-year-old has grown into one of the promising full-backs in Europe following an impressive 2024/25 season with the Portuguese giants.
He has been a vital cog in Bruno Lage’s side, bagging four goals and five assists in 49 appearances in all competitions.
His consistency in the Champions League also helped Benfica reach the round of 16 before losing to Barcelona.
Having already secured the deals for Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Madrid are now looking to reinforce their defence by signing Carreras.
Xabi Alonso, who will soon take over the reins as Madrid’s head coach, is eyeing more signings to be more successful in the upcoming expanded Club World Cup.
The left-back position was one of the let-downs this season, with Madrid largely affected by the inconsistent performances of Ferland Mendy.
Carreras can be a perfect fit for Alonso’s style of play, as he is an excellent progressive passer and carrier of the ball.
He is also a good reader of the game and makes timely interceptions and tackles. His outstanding work rate will also benefit Madrid.
