Sergio Aguero has denied reports he is set to come out of retirement to train with Argentine outfit Independiente.

Aguero was forced to retire in 2021, just months after joining Barcelona from Manchester City, after being diagnosed with a heart problem. He has since made appearances in a handful of charity friendlies.

In a recent video, Aguero shared a conversation with his cardiologist in which the idea of a return to competitive football was suggested, and that sparked reports that the former striker was set to train with Carlos Tevez's Independiente outfit to see whether he still has what it takes to play professionally.

Taking to Twitch to respond to the rumours, Aguero hit back at the "lies" about his future.

"The news [of a return will be reaching many. It's totally a lie," he said. "I'm not going to train with Independiente.

"Sometimes they know that they invent things, because just the other time I spoke to a cardiologist and he told me that I was in good health. But obviously, he said that I am in good health and to return to training at the top level I need to do a lot of studies."

Indeed, Aguero's cardiologist did admit a return was "possible" but insisted there was plenty of work to do before such a decision could be made.

"The way things are going so far, you won't have any problem playing at some point," the cardiologist said. "Logically we have to do the tests and make you run as if it were a game.

"And obviously, when you have the two central defenders...you have to make a fake or something like that, you have to be well prepared. So I would say...get ready, there is some hope. We can say that you're doing very well and that you have to get in good enough shape to be there for a few minutes.

"But I see you looking good, you're doing everything and you didn't have [side effects]. We're going to monitor you a little bit more. In short...it's possible, yes it's possible. You are doing very well."
