Arne Slot has said Liverpool deserved their luck at Paris Saint-Germain in midweek given their hard work at the Parc des Princes.
Liverpool weathered a storm from the home side to claim a precious first-leg lead in their Champions League tie.
PSG fired 27 shot on goal but could not find a route past an inspired Alisson, before Liverpool sealed a smash-and-grab success through Harvey Elliott’s goal. The midfielders goal was just the Reds’ second shot on goal of the game.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Southampton, Slot said Liverpool deserved their good fortune for their work ethic.
“I would say we weren’t a little bit lucky, we were really lucky but as Michael Jordan once said ‘the harder you work the more luck you have’ and this is the biggest compliment you have to give the players.
“They have worked incredibly hard and I think the second half we didn’t control ball possession, not the dominant team at all but we controlled them better than in the first half.”
Liverpool were reliant on a brilliant goalkeeping performance from Alisson in Paris. The Brazilian made nine saves, a joint-record by a goalkeeper in a Champions League knockout game. Match-winner Elliott called Alisson ‘the best in the world’ at full-time and Slot was asked what sets the Reds’ number one apart from other goalkeepers.
“Saving shots,” he joked.
“No, I think to become the best goalkeeper in the world you sometimes need to make saves others wouldn’t make. I think he made one or two on Wednesday. He had two world-class saves in big moments for us.”
