Despite beating Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has asked for caution for the return leg.

Despite that, though, Barcelona can afford to be optimistic. This is because, beyond the advantage, there are notable statistics that are in their favour.

To begin with, it must be noted that the 4-0 result is the biggest margin of victory ever achieved by Barcelona in a quarterfinal tie.

Record against Borussia Dortmund

It is to be noted that Barcelona have a strong record against Borussia Dortmund. To put things in perspective, the two have faced each other six times in the Champions League, with Barcelona winning four and drawing two.

Coming back to the 4-0 win from last week, it added to their perfect record against Dortmund this season, having defeated them 3-2 earlier in the competition.

Beyond the collective success, it is important to highlight one player who has an excellent record against Borussia Dortmund: Robert Lewandowski.

The veteran forward has scored 29 goals in 28 matches against his former club, making them his favourite opponent.

Flick’s winning streak against Dortmund

Furthermore, it is certainly not just Lewandowski, as even Flick has a remarkable record against the German club.

During his time at  Bayern Munich, the current Barcelona boss faced Dortmund five times between 2019 and 2021, winning every single match.

And now, at Barcelona, Flick has continued this winning form, securing two victories from as many matches.

Lastly, it must be noted that Barcelona also have a knack of turning ties around in the Champions League.

During the 2016-17 season, they achieved one of the greatest comebacks, overturning a 4-0 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

With all this in mind, Barcelona have every reason to believe that they can complete the job in the second leg and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
