Manchester City have announced that Therese Sjögran has joined the club as women’s director of football. The 47-year-old has taken the job following the departure of Nils Nielsen over the summer.
In her role, Sjögran will oversee recruitment across the women’s and girls’ pathway. The former Swedish international will also be responsible for the development of players and coaches. Retiring from her playing career in 2015, Sjögran was appointed women’s director of football at Rosengård. Making 214 appearances for the Sweden national team, the midfielder was part of the side to reach two major finals.
Speaking on the appointment, managing director Charlotte O’Neill said: “She is an undisputed icon of the game and has made a real impact on and off the pitch in both a playing and directorial capacity over the past two decades,. We have a fantastic team working behind the scenes to help the club compete for the top honours, and Therese is an excellent addition to that cohort.”
Manchester City currently sit top of the Women’s Super League. Dropping just two points across their opening five games, the Sky Blues are one of only three teams still unbeaten in the domestic top flight. Taking three points from Barcelona in the Champions League, Gareth Taylor’s side have enjoyed a near perfect start to the season.
Man City return to action with a visit to Crystal Palace before hosting Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on Friday, November 8th. Returning to European football a week later, City will host Hammarby at the Joie Stadium.
