Thorsten Fink on loss to Club Brugge: ‘We knew that we were facing the team that is currently the strongest in the country’ | OneFootball

Last Sunday the top two sides in the Belgian Pro League went head to head at the Jan Breydel in Brugge. In the end, it was Club Brugge who came out on top against the league leaders with a 2-0 win. Speaking after the game, Genk head coach Thorsten Fink was quick to praise the opposition. The former Sint Truiden head coach said ‘We knew that we were facing the team that is currently the strongest in the country’. Fink also went on to say how the form that Club Brugge have shown in Europe is a good thing for Belgian football as a whole, and also credited their ability to win the big games as coming from their experiences in Europe.

Yet, as Het Nieuwsblad also reported, Fink also wanted to point out that the game could have been different. Genk could easily have taken the lead in the second half when Tolu Arokodare was fouled in the area. However, the Nigerian striker saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet. This led to many question why the forward was taking the penalty when Jarne Steuckers had been the regular taker so far this season. Fink said of Arokodare ‘He is on the list with Steuckers. If he is not feeling one hundred percent, it is up to Tolu. He also scored convincingly from the penalty spot in a practice match’.

The result means that Club close the gap on the league leaders to just a single point as the winter break approaches. Both sides face tricky games next weekend against sides from Brussels. Club will face Union away from home while Genk will welcome Anderlecht.
