Tottenham Hotspur need three points to guarantee automatic qualification to the Europa League round of 16 when they face Elfsborg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, January 30th.
The game is being shown live on TNT Sports 2, kicking off at 8pm (UK time).
Tottenham Hotspur (4-3-3): Kinsky; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Gray; Bergvall, Bentancur, Bissouma; Kulusevski, Moore, Son.
Elfsborg (3-4-3): Petterson; Buhari, Henriksson, Yegbe; Hedlund, B. Zeneli, Ouma, Hult; A. Zeneli, Abdullai, Rapp.
Tottenham are suffering from a raft of injuries and could find the walking wounded into double figures in their final group phase game.
Their injury woes may have Ange Postecoglou’s side 11 men short. Dominic Solanke suffered a knee injury this month and will not return until March, as it stands.
Guglielmo Vicario has a fractured foot, meaning either Antonin Kinsky or Brandon Austin will have to step in between the sticks.
Destiny Udogie and Timo Werner are both expected to be out until next month with hamstring injuries, while Brennan Johnson faces a similar recovery time with his thigh issue.
Djed Spence, Pape Sarr, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Cristian Romero and Richarlison are all currently being assessed, but their chances of featuring are slim.
Meanwhile, Elfsborg travel to north London with an almost fully strengthened squad. The Swedish side could have just one absentee in their bid to make the round of 16 playoffs.
Simon Olsson is doubtful for Thursday night’s game due to an illness.
In September, Postecoglou claimed that he “always” wins trophies in his second season at a club, having claimed silverware in his sophomore years with Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F Marinos and Celtic.
Tottenham remain in contention to win three competitions this year: the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League. However, they still have a ways to go in the FA Cup, as they face Aston Villa away in the next round.
And, if they are unable to convert their 1-0 lead against Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final to book a trip to Wembley, the Europa League may be their best chance at silverware.
Victory against Elfsborg means Tottenham would bypass a playoff tie and head straight into the round of 16. In this year’s competition, they are looking to make it past the Europa League quarter-finals for the first time since 1984.
If anyone is going to be superstar for Postecoglou’s side on Thursday, it will be Heung-min Son. He is Spurs’ top goalscorer in the competition this season (3) and has provided the most assists for them in the Premier League (6).
