Roberto De Zerbi was hoisted skywards by his Marseille players at the Stade Océane on Saturday night. A 3-1 win over Le Havre sealed second place in Ligue 1, guaranteeing OM’s return to the Champions League. It was a symbolic image: a passionate coach, a unified team, a job well done. But behind the celebratory scenes, L’Équipe reports that questions swirl over whether the Italian will still be on the OM bench when next season kicks off. “I believe this is more than a miracle,” De Zerbi said post-match, visibly stung by what he perceived as a year of under-appreciation. “You all underestimated what we’ve done. OM hadn’t finished top two or reached the Champions League three times in the last ten years. We spent less, we lowered salaries, and yet we were competitive to the end.”According to L’Équipe journalist Mathieu Grégoire, the relationship between the club’s leadership and De Zerbi has cooled behind closed doors. The coach reportedly quietly criticised the squad’s imbalance, the club’s lack of urgency in the January window, and what he viewed as inconsistent messaging – including the club’s handling of Mason Greenwood and Luis Henrique.
For their part, senior figures at the club have raised eyebrows at the team’s defensive laxity, De Zerbi’s tolerance of rest days, and that stories linking him with AC Milan were allowed to circulate. GFFN | Freddie Aston
