Manchester City achieved what they set out to do in the January transfer window. They signed Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzàlez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad. Juma Bah and Christian McFarlane also arrived at the club. That is exactly what Manchester City needed to do in the market. Now, with the transfer window out of the way, there is plenty for play during the remainder of the season for the world champions.
Manchester City’s targets for the remainder of the 24/25 season are clear to see. Securing Champions League football for next season is a must. That is the bare minimum that must be achieved. They currently sit fifth on the Premier League table. Chelsea sits fourth, two points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side. There is a possibility that a top 5 finish may secure Champions League football for next season. But a top-four finish will remove the possibility of relying on extenuating circumstances dictating whether or not City can qualify for the Champions League. That is Manchester City’s major priority for the remainder of this season.
There is also the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League on the schedule of Pep Guardiola’s squad. A good FA Cup run could restore some confidence to the City players. That makes the FA Cup another crucial competition this season. City’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid offers the same opportunity. You do get the sense that if City can overcome Real Madrid it may provide them with the confidence they so desperately need.
There is also the FIFA Club World Cup to come as well this season. Whether or not you view that as a help or a hindrance depends on your point of view. But in a season where City have fallen off their perch there is still plenty to play for this season. If Manchester City can secure Champions League football for next season and have several good cup runs it will be a successful season based on how poor Pep Guardiola’s side has been at times.
