Day five at the 2019 Women’s World Cup produced last gasp drama, the weather playing havoc and the pre-tournament favourites obliterating the biggest win record.

Here’s what you may have missed.

New Zealand’s resilient defensive display against the Netherlands came up marginally short at the death as they fell to a 1-0 loss in Le Havre.

In fact, it was the Kiwis who came closest to a goal prior to injury time when Olivia Chance lashed a first half strike off the crossbar.

But their resistance was harshly broken in the 92nd minute when substitute Jill Roord nodded in a close range winner.

Conditions were far from ideal in Rennes for Chile’s clash with Sweden due to the torrential conditions in an encounter the Scandinavians went on to win 2-0.

The sides left the field at 0-0, largely thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Christiane Endler, who could do nothing about the two late goals which beat her.

Kosovare Asllani drilled in from range on 83 minutes before Madelen Janogy made sure of the points in the final minute.

The USA set down a frightening early marker by blitzing Thailand to score 13 unanswered goals, setting a new record for a win in the competition.

Alex Morgan starred by scoring five with Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis also contributing with braces, while Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd got the others.

No team has ever won in this competition by such a large margin as the USWNT showed that they mean business in France.
