A strong performance from Manchester United saw them take all three points from Tottenham in what was the first meeting since last season’s Women’s FA Cup final. Goals from Elisabeth Terland and Maya Le Tissier upheld their unbeaten start to the season.

Coming into the match, Tottenham were in great goal-scoring form, having netted eight goals in three WSL appearances. However, United boasted a great defensive record, having not conceded a single goal so far this season.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spencer; Neville, Bartrip, Hunt, Grant, Summanen, Ahtinen, Naz, Spence, Thomas, England.

How it went

Tottenham started with great intensity and enjoyed four chances within the first ten minutes. The best chance of the half for the visitors fell to Drew Spence however her long-range effort was pushed over the bar.

Breaking the deadlock minutes before halftime, Elisabeth Terland hit home a cross by ex-Tottenham player Celin Bizet to put United a goal ahead. The exact same play happened just five minutes later and Terland showed off her ariel ability as she headed the ball home to double the advantage.

Second Half

Terland almost secured her hattrick in the 50th minute, however a save from Spencer pushed the Norwegian’s effort onto the post.

United skipper Maya Le Tissier stepped up and converted a penalty following a handball from Ashleigh Neville. The goal made it 3-0 with 30 minutes left to play. During the eight minutes of additional time, two saves from Tullis-Joyce prevented Spence from getting on the scoresheet, keeping yet another clean sheet.

The win moves Manchester United third in the table whilst Tottenham sit in seventh.
