PSV loanee Yorbe Vertessen was the player of the match as Union St Gilloise ran out 4-0 winners over relegation threatened Zulte Waregem. The Brussel’s based side cruised to victory over a Zulte Waregem XI that was appeared to be set up more in hope than expectation as Mbaye Leye left key players such as Ruud Vormer and Jelle Vossen on the bench. Union, however, did not allow complacency to slip in and it was Yorbe Vertessen who was to thank.
The 22-year-old forward grabbed two assists, the first for Cameron Peurtas openers and the second to strike partner Victor Boniface. It was fitting that the Belgian played like he did on the night that Dante Vanzeir said his goodbye’s to the fans prior to the match. Vertessen was brought in to replace Vanzeir who is set to join New York Red Bulls in the MLS.
Vertessen was substituted to a standing ovation in the 65th minute, with his replacement Gustaf Nilsson getting himself on the scoresheet in the 79th minute. This means that the 25-year-old Swede has scored four goals in his last four games. The final action of the game saw Union captain Teddy Teuma take advantage of poor Zulte Waregem defending to rifle in a volley on the 89th minute.
Union have not lost in the league since the 11th of September when they were beaten by current league leaders Genk 2-1.
