FLW look at James Maddison's earnings during his time at Norwich City.
James Maddison has become a Premier League star for Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur over the past few seasons, but before that, the attacking midfielder plied his trade at Norwich City.
Joining the Canaries from Coventry City in January 2016, the former Sky Blues star made his debut for the East Anglian club in the summer of that year. Following his first appearance, he was sent out on loan to Aberdeen to gain experience. He impressed during his six-month spell in Scotland, scoring twice and providing seven assists in 17 appearances.
However, English football was always where his heart lay, and in the summer of 2017, new Norwich boss Daniel Farke made him a key part of his side. Maddison enjoyed a standout campaign, netting 14 goals and registering eight assists in the Championship, which saw him named Norwich City’s Player of the Season.
His performances caught the attention of Leicester City, who secured his signature for £20 million that summer. Maddison continued to flourish at the King Power Stadium, scoring 55 goals and providing 39 assists in 203 appearances. His impressive form led to a £40 million move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, where he has continued to excel.
With this in mind, Football League World has taken a closer look at Maddison's earnings during his time at Norwich and how they have evolved following his high-profile transfers.
Note: It must be stressed that this is an estimate provided by Capology's wage calculation system.
According to Capology, Maddison began on a wage of £10,000 per week during the 2016-17 campaign - a season in which he featured just four times for the Canaries.
However, he was rewarded with a new contract at the end of that season, which saw his wages increase by 50% to £15,000 per week. Over the course of a season, this amounted to £780,000 - significantly above Norwich’s average annual salary in 2017-18 (£558,664).
Among the club’s highest earners that year were Timm Klose and Alexander Tettey, who earned £27,000 and £25,000 per week respectively, with Grant Hanley also receiving the same wage as Tettey.
Across his two full seasons at Carrow Road, Maddison earned a respectable £1.3 million - though this figure is dwarfed by his current earnings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Moving to Leicester in 2018, Maddison's wages took a huge hike as he moved to a weekly wage of £55,000.
In 2020, he signed a new four-year contract which saw his wage double to £110,000 every seven days. This means that across a season, the Foxes star took home a staggering £5.72 million - the second-highest figure at the club, behind only Jamie Vardy.
His move to Tottenham in 2023 was always set to increase his earnings, and last season the attacking midfielder earned £170,000 per week. During a campaign in which he contributed to 13 goals, Spurs' number 10 took home a total of £8.84 million.
This season, he remains on the same wage, and while his team has faced criticism for inconsistent performances, Maddison has continued to make an impact in the final third.
A creative and dynamic player, the 28-year-old’s current wages are a far cry from what he earned at Norwich, where he was on just £10,000–£15,000 per week.
