Juventus ready to pay £70m to sign Newcastle United midfielder

Juventus are quietly laying the groundwork for a headline-grabbing return — not just of a player, but of a symbol. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Bianconeri are exploring the possibility of bringing Sandro Tonali back to Serie A, just over one year after the Italian midfielder joined Newcastle United.

While no formal offer has been submitted, Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has already opened indirect lines of communication, with the club identifying Tonali as the ideal midfield engine for their evolving project.
Juve’s interest in Tonali is rooted in more than just sentiment. The 24-year-old is admired across the Juventus hierarchy for his tactical intelligence, positional discipline and leadership potential. The club is determined to add “a turbo Italian, national and winning,” as Gazzetta dello Sport puts it, and Tonali fits that brief precisely.
The deal, however, is far from straightforward. Newcastle are expected to demand at least €60–70 million, a figure Juventus hope to reduce by including players in the negotiation. Douglas Luiz, who has struggled to establish himself in Turin due to injuries and a lack of chemistry with manager Thiago Motta, is considered a key candidate to be part of a swap deal. His Premier League pedigree — 10 goals and 10 assists last season for Aston Villa — remains highly regarded in England.

There’s also the matter of relationships. Giuntoli’s winter move for Lloyd Kelly — reportedly costing €20 million — has helped build a constructive channel between the two clubs. Juventus believe this could be used to their advantage in any future Tonali negotiations.
In addition to Luiz, Juve could tempt Newcastle with other players. Federico Gatti was previously considered by Eddie Howe last summer, while Dusan Vlahovic — yet to renew his contract expiring in 2026 — remains on Newcastle’s radar, particularly if Alexander Isak departs.

Tonali, who helped Milan win the Scudetto before his Premier League switch, is not actively seeking a return to Italy, but nostalgia could play a role. “He is not obsessed with returning,” reports Gazzetta, “but the thought occasionally emerges.” Juventus are hoping that a strong sporting project, paired with emotional pull, could sway the midfielder.
For Newcastle fans, this report will spark more than a flicker of concern. Sandro Tonali may still be integrating into life on Tyneside, but his commitment on and off the pitch had been cause for optimism.
So hearing that Juventus are plotting a return move — and that Tonali is at least open to it — creates a cloud of uncertainty. It’s even more unsettling given the financial figures involved. Newcastle don’t need to sell, but a £60–70m offer, sweetened with a quality player like Douglas Luiz or even Dusan Vlahovic, might tempt decision-makers — especially if PIF are juggling Financial Fair Play thresholds.
This isn’t just about replacing a player; it’s about losing a long-term asset, someone acquired not just for ability but identity. If Juventus manage to pull this off, it’s not just a signing — it’s a statement. And for Newcastle, it could be an unwelcome shift in momentum.
