It wouldn’t be a Manchester City match if there wasn’t a fresh injury concern to arise from it. During their 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in their Champions League knockout phase play-off tie Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji had to be substituted due to injury. Based on Pep Guardiola’s comments post-game it appears that both players may be joining City’s injury list.
First of all, Jack Grealish had to be substituted on the half-hour mark last night. It was a shame as Grealish had stated last night’s match well. He played a key role in Erling Haaland’s opening goal and Grealish did look to be up for the occasion last night. Unfortunately, he looked to have suffered a hamstring injury and had to be replaced by Phil Foden.
Manuel Akanji went down with an apparent injury just before halftime. He played on until the interval but he was replaced by Rico Lewis. Akanji had looked decent at right-back before injury struck. It wasn’t immediately clear what type of injury the Swiss international suffered last night.
In quotes relayed by CityXtra on X, Pep Guardiola believes that Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji could miss City’s Premier League match against Newcastle and next week’s second leg against Real Madrid. He revealed that the pair had sustained muscle injuries. Guardiola was asked if the pair could play against Real Madrid next week: “I don’t know yet, but if they have gone out for muscular reasons, maybe they will not be there.”
Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji are now the latest Manchester City players to pick up injuries. Just when you think City may be getting their full squad back two more players go down. Now it is a waiting game to see just how long the pair will be sidelined for.
