Lazio are still pushing to secure the signature of Maurizio Sarri, but they’re facing competition from other suitors, especially Atalanta.
A major merry-go-round is currently taking place in Serie A, and it includes the dugouts of almost every top club in Italian football. The Biancocelesti are no exception, as the decision to part ways with Marco Baroni has already been taken following a disappointing end to the season, and it is expected to be communicated in the coming hours.
In recent days, Sarri emerged as the leading candidate to fill in the vacancy at Formello. The 66-year-old was in charge of Lazio between the summer of 2021 and March 2024 when he resigned after losing control of the dressing room.
But as Claudio Lotito pointed out, the rebels who rose against Sarri (Immobile, Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson) are long gone, so the manager can now start anew and help develop a crop of young up-and-comers.
Nevertheless, La Lazio Siamo Noi reveals that the former Napoli and Chelsea boss has yet to give a definite answer. As the source explains, the experienced tactician has also received a call from Atalanta who are looking to replace their longtime manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The latter is reportedly close to taking over at Roma.
Hence, Sarri is reportedly biding his time, reflecting on the matter before deciding which path he’ll embark on. In the meantime, Lazio continue to keep tabs on alternative targets, especially Gennaro Gattuso.
For his part, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio confirms Atalanta’s interest in Sarri, but believes that Lazio remain the favorites to bring the manager back to Rome. The transfer market expert explains how La Dea are being impeded by their delay in the procedures leading to Gasperini’s exit, while the Aquile will imminently make room for Sarri by sacking Baroni.
