In the absence of Richarlison, Ange Postecoglou started with new January signing Mathys Tel.

The 19-year-old joined Spurs on loan Bayern Munich in the January window, and made his debut in the 4-0 loss against Liverpool. He started on the left, while Son Heung-Min operated as a striker.

It was not an unfamiliar position for Tel. He has often played in wide roles for Bayern, but it was expected that he would primarily play in the number nine role for Spurs.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker was pleased with the youngster’s effort, and he hailed his goal as “exquisite”.

Micah Richards also added that Tel has got loads of qualities, and the goal will give him a lot of confidence.

The popular pundit said: “He’s got that quality though, hasn’t he? He’s got that quality. He’s still only young, he’s still learning, but I totally agree with Alan on that point.

“Good little movement and just finished off. Just give him a little bit of confidence as well, because like you said earlier on, Son is not really playing with the confidence we’ve seen of old, even in just taking so many touches.”

Tel provided something positive for the travelling supporters to cheer about as he scored the only goal for Spurs. In the 91st minute, he scores his first goal for the club with a clever finish, showing off a typical striker’s instinctive movement.

Postecoglou has defended his players after the game, but pressure mounts on his future. Spurs are missing at least ten players at the moment through injuries, but they need to get back to winning ways quickly.
