Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone addressed the media ahead of his team’s crucial UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash against Real Madrid.
He emphasised the significance of the fixture and acknowledged the challenges his side could encounter against their city rivals.
Simeone made it clear that past encounters between the two sides would have no bearing on this match. He stressed the level of respect Atletico Madrid have for Real Madrid, recognising them as a top-quality opponent.
However, he also expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete at the highest level, highlighting the importance of being prepared for any scenario that may unfold on the pitch.
“We have a lot of respect, against a great rival, the previous matches have no influence at all, for Madrid it is spectacular, for Spain it will also be very good.
“We will enjoy it, it is a very important match, with a lot of respect, but prepared for everything that has to come,” he began saying.

When asked about which team should be considered the favourite, Simeone dismissed the notion of assigning such a label.
He acknowledged that Real Madrid is a strong and well-respected opponent but insisted that Atletico Madrid knows its own strengths.
“I don’t understand and obviously I respect the search for a favourite. It is an important rival that we respect and we also know our strength and we try to enhance it.“
Regarding the approach Atletico Madrid should take at the Santiago Bernabeu, Simeone suggested that staying competitive and making a statement were interconnected.
“The two situations are related, I can’t see any difference between one and the other.”

The debate about whether Atletico Madrid are on the same level as Real Madrid and Barcelona has been a long-standing one.
Simeone acknowledged the historical significance of those two clubs but pointed out that Atletico Madrid has been on a continuous path of growth.
“I always put them where they are because of their history, we are pure growth, which is very nice.”
As for Real Madrid’s record in the Champions League, Simeone recognised their remarkable history in the competition.
However, he remained focused on the present, believing that Atletico Madrid will have a great opportunity to make their mark in the upcoming encounter.
“As we always relate things to history, Madrid’s history in the Champions League is extraordinary. But tomorrow we will surely have a great opportunity,” he concluded.
