Manchester United returned to successful ways in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brentford this afternoon.

Erik ten Hag’s men entered this contest on a three-game winless run that saw them fail to score in each outing. Having found themselves going a goal behind through Ethan Pinnock’s effort just before half-time, Alejandro Garnacho equalised before Rasmus Højlund secured all three points.

United have won all four of their Premier League home games against Brentford, only facing Wigan (8), Birmingham (7), and Portsmouth (7) as many or more times at Old Trafford while winning 100% in the competition.

After dropping the most points from winning positions in the Premier League last season (30), Brentford have already also now dropped the most after leading this season in the division (11).

Man Utd player ratings

André Onana: 66%

It was a quiet outing for Onana despite Brentford finding the net. He ended up with one save, though, with a 59.1% pass accuracy, which isn’t exemplary for a sweeper-keeper.

Lisandro Martínez: 66%

Noussair Mazraoui being only fit to start on the bench saw Erik ten Hag re-jig his backline with Lisandro Martínez starting at left-back. He put in a commendable shift with two interceptions, winning two tackles and making nine final third entries.

Jonny Evans: 63%

He was dominant in Man Utd’s defence, winning two of his three aerial duels while boasting a 100% ground duel success rate.

Matthijs de Ligt: 65%

Made three interceptions, leading to retaining possession. He completed 42 passes with an overall 96.36% retention rate.

Diogo Dalot: 61%

He returned to his more favourable right-back slot, winning four aerial duels and producing three clearances while making five final third entries.

Casemiro: 67%

Successfully claimed possession in the defensive third on seven occasions, won four tackles, duels and one interception, but was dribbled past twice.

Christian Eriksen: 50%

He was dribbled past on three occasions and could not complete one of his ones in a disappointing outing that also yielded a 36.36% final third pass completion rate.

Alejandro Garnacho: 72%

He scored United’s equaliser and the fourth-best rating of any Premier League winger or attacking midfielder this weekend so far. Garnacho took five shots on target, the most of any player in this gameweek so far. He completed two take-ons out of four and managed ten touches in the opponent’s box, the second most in his position of the gameweek.

Bruno Fernandes: 63%

Made his second assist of the season for Hojlund’s match-winner. Tested Flekken with two shots on target and won two tackles.

Marcus Rashford: 59%

Assisted United’s equaliser but completed no take-ons, nor did he produce any shots on target. Rashford, however, registered the most passes into the final third with a total of 25.

Rasmus Højlund: 72%

Put his side in front after the hour mark. That came from one of two shots on goal, with the Danish marksman winning four aerial duels.

Brentford player ratings

Mark Flekken: 68%

Produced nine saves, five of which were made inside the penalty area. However, he conceded twice and prevented 0.15 goals from being scored.

Kristoffer Ajer: 55%

He won one tackle and two aerial duels but was seldom a threat going forward as Garnacho often had him on the back foot.

Ethan Pinnock: 70%

Broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. He also made two interceptions, one inside the box, and one last-man tackle while producing eight clearances with a 94.25% retention rate.

Nathan Collins: 63%

Successfully claimed possession in the defensive third on three occasions, won seven aerial duels and two interceptions, but was dribbled past once.

Sepp van den Berg: 54%

This was a frustrating outing for the Dutch full-back who, despite making four interceptions, also gave the ball away with three unsuccessful touches.

Vitaly Janelt: 38%

It was a disappointing outing for the German, who seldom impacted Brentford at both ends, as he could not complete a single take-on while making 35 accurate passes before coming off.

Christian Nørgaard: 62%

He made two interceptions and won three tackles, and though he made five passes into the final third, only 19.23% of those were successful.

Keane Lewis-Potter: 47%

Subbed off for Yoane Wissa in the 66th minute. Completed one take-on but, statistically speaking, made no other significant attacking contribution.

Bryan Mbeumo: 58%

Failed to score or assist, which would have made him the first Brentford player to hit 50 Premier League goal involvements. Completed four of five take-ons but created no ‘big chances’ and didn’t manage a single shot on target.

Mikkel Damsgaard: 61%

Set up Ethan Pinnock’s opener from a corner, his second assist in as many games, but failed to contribute any more ‘big chances’. Completed three of the five take-ons attempted.

Kevin Schade: 38%

Won two aerial duels and took one shot but was otherwise largely uninvolved, bar the collision that resulted in De Ligt’s head injury (Brentford scored while the Dutchman was receiving treatment). No shots on target or ‘big chances’ created.

How do Squawka player ratings work?

Squawka’s new player rating system is wholly stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.

We tailored each score to the players’ respective positions using extensive research and expertise. For example, forwards are rated on metrics like shots on target, touches in the opposition box, and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes, etc.
