In their live transfer blog on Tuesday (14 January 4:04 pm), Sky Sports shared the latest update on the future of Dundee FC midfielder Lyall Cameron. Scottish giants Rangers are working on tying him down on a pre-contract agreement to secure his services on a Bosman upon the completion of the 2024-25 campaign.
The 22-year-old Scotland youth international progressed through the academy ranks of Dundee United before joining their traditional rivals Dundee at the age of 15. Loan spells in League One with Peterhead and Montrose helped him develop his traits in senior football and the breakthrough 2022-23 season was pivotal en route to securing a top-flight status.
Cameron has been integral to the Dark Blues’ resurgence over the past two years. With 8 goals and 7 assists in 27 appearances, the youngster has exhibited his expertise so far this term. While he prefers to operate from the deep, a ‘number 10’ as well as wide midfield role also suits his style of play. Dundee have offered him a new contract, but the interest from Ibrox is hard to turn down given their exposure in Europe.
The Dee manager Tony Docherty is not surprised to see Rangers making their move for the prized asset.
“We have identified, as a club, to offer contract extensions and it is then their prerogative what they do with them. A couple have come back and said they will sign and others are exploring their options. “Lyall is in that category.”
The gaffer further revealed (as quoted by the Daily Record) how he relied on Cameron following Luke McCowan’s transfer to Celtic on the summer deadline day. He must be delighted to witness the progress made by the young ace.

The Gers have ample depth in midfield with Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, Connor Barron and Kieran Dowell challenging and covering each other as deep-lying playmakers. However, Dowell does not belong to Philippe Clement’s first-team plans, also, Barron has lost his place to fit-again Raskin having featured regularly in the initial months. The Belgian’s position as the Rangers boss is in jeopardy after yet another disappointing league campaign, but the club CEO Patrick Stewart is making the most of these opportunities in the transfer market.
The Glasgow giants have struck a similar deal with Barron back in the summer window. They could not find an agreement with Aberdeen over the compensation fee, and the Light Blues eventually paid £639,920, with an additional £250k of conditional performance-based payments as ruled by a SPFL tribunal. Dundee might opt for a similar route if a fee could not be agreed upon between the two outfits.
However, a player of Cameron’s potential should bolster the Light Blues in the long run irrespective of the compensation. They could either sell him for a higher fee in a few years or benefit from his services for the next decade. Fans should acknowledge such signings considering the club’s financial constraints.
