It was a breathless Sunday in the Premier League with two games of the highest order.

Here is what we made of it all.

What happened?

Manchester City maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a controversial late win over Wolves.

Pep Guardiola’s side had been frustrated for almost all of the 95 minutes at Molineux but an added time header from John Stones gave the reigning champions all three points.

Wolves were left fuming though as they thought the goal should have been ruled out for an offside with Bernardo Silva ahead of the ball and, in their eyes, in view of goalkeeper Jose Sa.

The headline occasion came from Anfield though, as Liverpool reclaimed their place at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

The Blues played well and caused Arne Slot’s side plenty of problems, but Curtis Jones’s second half strike was enough to secure the victory for the hosts.

Player of the day

If this is to be Mohamed Salah’s last season as a Liverpool player then he seems intent in going out right at the very top.

Salah scored his 162nd Premier League goal for the Reds this afternoon, dispatching a penalty that took him level with Jermain Defoe in the all-time division rankings.

The next on that list is Robbie Fowler with 163 and it will surely take a miracle for the Egypt international not to overtake the man they call ‘God’ on Merseyside.

If Salah does become the club’s record Premier League scorer, then there really can be no doubt as to his inclusion in an all-time Reds XI.

Stat of the day

Manchester City threw everything but the kitchen sink at Wolves earlier on.

Gary O’Neil’s side were equal to almost everything at Molineux and would have been good value for a point.

As it was though, Stones headed in a 95th minute winner with their 18th corner of the game – the most from any side in the Premier League so far this season.

What this means

Liverpool are back on top of the division after their seventh win in eight games whilst Manchester City are just a point behind.

Chelsea remain in sixth place just one point ahead of Tottenham whilst Wolves are rock bottom with a solitary point.

What they said

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca claimed that the Anfield crowd influenced some decisions today with Liverpool getting a penalty in  the first half. He told Sky Sports: “I didn’t see anything in terms of decisions from the referee. The only thing I can see is in this stadium is sometimes the noise of the crowd.

“The only thing I can say is the referee is there to make decisions. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong. Sometimes it is because of the noise [of the crowd], but overall I think they did OK.”

Pep Guardiola meanwhile called his Manchester City team ‘outstanding’ after their win at the death.

“We are not a team that win games right at the end but the performance there was outstanding,” he told Sky Sports.

“We have a lot of players with quality up front, but a lot of players in the box is difficult. They are aggressive, strong. We played really good to have the chances we had. The players who came in were unbelievable and to win that way feels good.”

This Premier League matchweek ends tomorrow evening with Nottingham Forest hosting Crystal Palace.

Next week meanwhile sees Arsenal take on Liverpool and Chelsea host Newcastle.
