According to an update shared by SPORT, it has come to light that Barcelona are prioritising a contract renewal for Frenkie de Jong, with Deco and Hansi Flick keen to secure the Dutch midfielder’s long-term future at the club.
As such, there are claims that talks over a renewal have already begun with the player’s camp, and there is growing optimism that an agreement can be reached soon.
De Jong is currently under contract until 2026, and Barcelona have offered a three-year extension, keeping him at the club until 2029. This proposal includes the same salary he currently earns—between €18m and €19m gross per season.
Given the club’s financial constraints, maintaining his wages rather than offering an increase is a strategic move to keep their wage bill under control.
Deco met with De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, on February 19 to present the new renewal proposal, as the previous offer had expired. The midfielder now has a crucial decision to make.

A key factor in De Jong’s decision to stay at Barcelona is the influence of Flick. The German coach has full confidence in the Dutchman and has made him a starter in his plans.
With Marc Casado injured, De Jong is expected to play an even more prominent role in midfield during the crucial final stretch of the season.
Barcelona are also building a competitive squad for the future, and De Jong sees himself as a central figure in Flick’s long-term project.
The atmosphere at the club is far more positive now than in previous months, increasing the chances of securing his renewal.
With the club determined to finalise the extension in the coming weeks, optimism is high that De Jong will commit his future to Barcelona.
While negotiations will continue until the end of the season, all signs suggest that the Dutch midfielder is leaning towards staying at the club.
