Wednesday are set to lose a lot of their playing staff this summer, as things stand.

There are options in the contracts of four Sheffield Wednesday players to extend their stays at Hillsborough by a year, including top scorer Josh Windass.

No fewer than 16 of the Owls' players are currently set to leave the club at the end of this season, marking the start of what could be a massive period of change as the future of the manager, Danny Rohl, is less than secure either.

Wednesday have to submit their list of which players are leaving as free agents, who have been offered new contracts, and so on, by Saturday (17th May), leaving them not a tonne of time to make big decisions on the likes of club captain Barry Bannan, who is one of the 16 whose contracts are up this summer.

Also on that list is Windass. He has played a major role for the club ever since joining them from Wigan Athletic nearly five years ago, and will be best remembered for that header against Barnsley at Wembley to win the League One play-off final and, more importantly, secure Wednesday's return to the Championship.

The indications have all pointed towards him leaving. His father, Dean Windass, said that the Owls' final contest at Hillsborough this season, against Portsmouth, was going to be his son's last for the club. Wednesday, however, may have a lifeline that they can activate to keep him around for longer.

Contract extension options for four Sheffield Wednesday players revealed

The Star have stated that Windass and three of his teammates, Anthony Musaba, Pol Valentin and Michael Smith, all have options in their contracts which, if activated, would extend their stays at Hillsborough. As is the case with their teammates, these options must be exercised by Saturday to make them valid, but not all of them are clear on their futures, according to the Sheffield outlet.

It's not clear on which side of the agreement these options lie - either with the club or the players - or whether these options are performance-related, which would be triggered automatically if certain targets were hit.

Josh Windass should be a priority signing for Sheffield Wednesday this summer

If the Owls can defy the words of the forward's father and manage to hold onto him, it would be a massive win for them. You can see from his aforementioned attacking numbers just how instrumental he has been in Rohl's offense.

He was presented with the opportunity to join Brazilian side Santos in the winter, although nothing ever came of it, but proposals like that can open your eyes to what else is out there. That may have happened with Windass, but, if they have the chance, Wednesday should be willing to activate that clause that would tie him down for a further season.
