Captain, Maximilian Arnold struck an angry and frustrated figure on Sunday evening as VfL Wolfsburg succumbed to their third consecutive defeat away to Union Berlin.

With resident Union Berlin DJ, Jerome Roussillon playing Cher’s ‘Believe’ from the Union Berlin dressing room, Arnold could not hide his feelings about the Wolfsburg performance.

“We need to be more stable defensively and we need to score a goal up front,”

“We missed the basics.”

The captain was fed up.

Cher’s voice carried easily over the 20 metres from the Union dressing room to the mixed zone.

Arnold failed to see the funny side as Cher blazed out, “Do you believe in life after love?”

Arnold seemed to be falling out of love and out of patience with Wolfsburg’s performances.

“Screw the table! We’ve lost three games now, we should get some points again.

“Everything else doesn’t matter.”

Cher was completing her chorus as Arnold faced the reality of Wolfsburg situation.

With Wolfsburg now 12th and six points off Gladbach in sixth, Cher spoke for Arnold:

“What am I supposed to do?Sit around and wait for you?Well, I can’t do thatAnd there’s no turning back

His dream of Europe was drifting away and his answers became shorter and snappier.

“We lost 1-0 with a sloppy goal. We’ve lost three games now. What more is there to say?

“We need to be more solid defensively. And we need to score a goal up front.”

Evidently, Arnold needed “time to move on”.

But Cher was only just getting started.

“Oh, I don’t need you anymoreNo, I don’t need you anymore”

As Cher built to a crescendo, Arnold refused to say more than yes or no to media questions, occasionally curtly asking for the opinions of the journalists.

“What do you think? You tell me? What do you think?”

Arnold felt his side were overcomplicating things.

He closed his interview with one final line.

“Football can be that simple sometimes.”

Arnold drifted away with Cher still haunting him.

“Do you believe in life after love?”

The song, like the interview, lasted no more than a few minutes.

However, Wolfsburg still have European ambitions and six more games of the Bundesliga to play for.

Yet, it is unclear where Head Coach, Hasenhüttl will remain in charge.

Neither Peter Christiansen nor sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz wanted to comment after the game about his future.

With Wolfsburg sliding backwards after just one win in seven, the club are now asking themselves if there is life after Hasenhüttl.
