The five managers Sheffield Wednesday must consider should Danny Rohl leave the club this summer
Danny Rohl’s future at Sheffield Wednesday is in doubt following the end of the Championship season.
According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Philipp Hinze, the 36-year-old has an exit clause in his contract that is worth seven figures.
The coach is attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Crystal Palace and Fulham, as well as Leicester City and Southampton.
It’s also been reported that there are clubs in the Bundesliga monitoring his situation, although it’s believed that a domestic is more likely, if he does leave Hillsborough.
Rohl himself appeared to bid farewell to the club in an emotionally-charged press conference, which has left Wednesayites fearing the worst, following the Owls' final day 1-1 draw with Watford.
Here we look at five managers Sheffield Wednesday must consider as fears of Rohl’s exit grow…
Rob Edwards is currently out of work, and could be open to a return to the Championship after the disappointment of his Luton Town exit.
The 42-year-old guided the Hatters to Premier League promotion in 2023, and their 18th place finish was a commendable showing despite ultimately going straight back down.
Given what he’s achieved with limited resources, he could be a smart free agent candidate to replace Rohl.
Tom Cleverley is now on the market after he was dismissed by Watford at the end of the campaign.
While he is not the most experienced potential candidate, he showed during his brief spell at the Hornets that he has what it takes to compete at this level as a coach.
The 35-year-old led Watford to a 14th-place finish, but they were in the mix for a play-off place for much of the campaign, despite many tipping them for a relegation battle prior to the season getting underway back in August.
Michael Carrick’s future at Middlesbrough is currently in doubt, with FLW exclusively revealing that he is in danger of being sacked.
However, he’s done a solid job with the Teesside outfit, regularly getting the team to compete for promotion despite losing quality players in almost every transfer window.
He’s overseen fourth, eighth and 10th place finishes during his time with Boro, and could have what it takes to bring Sheffield Wednesday forward, if he becomes available in the coming weeks.
Martí Cifuentes and Rohl both accomplished similar feats in the 2023/24 campaign, with the pair taking over doomed relegation candidates with limited resources and guiding them to safety.
While Rohl kicked on this season and led the Owls to 12th in the table, Cifuentes’ side were more inconsistent and treaded water a bit.
But now that he is available, he could be a smart replacement for Rohl as the change in scenery might be what’s needed for the Spaniard after a strained relationship with the QPR hierarchy.
The Spanish boss is currently on gardening leave ahead of a likely departure from Loftus Road, presumably to another Championship club,
Miron Muslic was a left-field candidate to replace Wayne Rooney at Plymouth Argyle, but he proved a fantastic appointment.
Despite being unable to keep the Pilgrims in the Championship, he turned the team around and brought them extremely close to safety, while also earning a big scalp over Liverpool in the FA Cup.
If he is open to remaining in the Championship, then Sheffield Wednesday could do a lot worse than look to appoint Muslic if Rohl departs.
Muslic's own future at Plymouth is currently up in the air, with the Bosnian-Austrian boss recently revealing how he is unsure whether he will stay on at Home Park owing to issues behind the scenes.
