Liverpool manager Arne Slot made an interesting comparison following his side’s shocking defeat to Plymouth Argyle.
The Dutch tactician has been enjoying a sensational first campaign in England, as the Reds appear to be on their way towards an inevitable Premier League triumph. They also finished on top of the Champions League’s 36-team group-stage table.
However, Liverpool’s FA Cup campaign proved significantly less prosperous, ending with an astonishing defeat to Plymouth in the fourth round. Slot introduced some of the players who saw less playing time this season, and chief amongst them Federico Chiesa, as he thought his starting lineup should have more than enough quality to seal the deal against the Championship side.

Nevertheless, Plymouth produced an upset for the ages, as Ryan Hardie’s spot-kick in the 53rd minute proved to be the solitary difference between the sides.
After the contest, Slot explained the difficulties the Reds endured during the contest against a team that adopted a rigid style of play, and even went on to compare this contest to their 2-2 draw against Man Utd at Anfield, suggesting that the 46-year-old found that result hard to swallow.
“I think we’ve seen during this season, we’ve seen a few times already, that it’s a game plan, a playing style, which is difficult for our starters, but also for the ones that played [on Saturday],” said Slot in his post-match interview.
“So, constantly long ball, second ball, long balls, second balls. It’s difficult for every team. We had it with United at home, for example, as well. They had a similar playing style, going to a very low block [then] kick every ball long, and then we played with our starters.”
Liverpool saw more of the ball in their contest against Man Utd, but Ruben Amorim’s men were dangerous on the counter-attacks.
