Baroni Dismisses Maestrelli Comparisons, Claims Lazio Winger ‘Underestimates Himself’

Lazio coach Marco Baroni was once again pleased with the team’s performance, as his men managed to put five goals past Como to claim a midweek Serie A win. The 61-year-old began his post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) by paying tribute to Flavio, the young Lazio supporter who lost his life following a battle with illness.

I would like to congratulate the team and dedicate the victory to Flavio’s family, a boy who was unlucky in life but was close to the team. So we want to dedicate it to him and his family.

Baroni Pleased with Lazio Performance

Baroni was impressed by what he saw from his players who managed the match well against Cesc Fabregas’ men.

It was an excellent match. We knew it was going to be difficult. I watched Como play since last season. They are a good side with a great coach who likes to dominate the action. I said that we needed to be at our best, play aggressive football and press high. We did well and I especially liked how we managed possession. The team must never lose its identity. I always ask them to play proactive football, score goals, run forward. We must always maintain the same approach.

On Tavares Dismissal

The Lazio boss avoided making any controversial comments when discussing Nuno Tavares’ expulsion.

I don’t want to cause a stir. We should have been more careful. It’s not easy. I’ve already expressed myself on this topic [refereeing]. We have a good match officials, and the same goes for the assistants and linesmen. But with these new rules, it’s difficult for them too.

Shrugging Aside Maestrelli Comparisons

Lazio president Claudio Lotito recently compared Baroni to Tommaso Maestrelli, the legendary manager who secured the club’s first Scudetto title. Nevertheless, the incumbent Lazio manager is keeping his feet on the ground.

We’re talking about a stratospheric coach. We cannot compare any manager to Maestrelli.

Isaksen, Tchaouna & Castrovilli

The former Hellas Verona coach suggested that Gustav Isaksen, Loum Tchaouna and Gaetano Castrovilli are lacking in confidence.

We have players with so much quality. Isaksen underestimates himself, Tchaouna too. I celebrated his goal because I knew he really needed to score. They were used to being the best at their previous clubs. The same goes for Castrovilli. He’s working hard, I didn’t give him the opportunity but I don’t want to lose him, as he’ll be important to our plans.
